I am very excited to be part of the Power BI team. Power BI is a very interesting product; it is Microsoft’s first Freemium product and it’s a SaaS Service.
In a Freemium world it’s all about viral adoption. The way we sold and marketed solutions in the past will not work in this new model, also the cost of sales is very high compared to the initial return because you cannot monetize the solution until you reach mass adoption. Finally with a monthly release cycle you can’t have launch events, instead you need to be always marketing.
Having said that in a SaaS world, you can collect a lot more data during the customer journey that will enable you to better understand the customers, sell and market to them, opening up a huge opportunity for better targeting, marketing and sales.
There are several trends to watch but they can be summarized under 2 broad categories:
- Using data to personalize the customer experience
- Building engaging experiences across every channel
In summary, there’s a huge opportunity in this new world. To capture that opportunity you need to be more data driven and centralized in driving Freemium solutions, and the product needs to change to enable better customer experience and close the loop faster. This is what gets me up from bed everyday.
One of the things I noticed during my 16 years at Microsoft is that even though Microsoft releases a lot of information, tools, webcasts, etc… Most of our partners and customers can’t find this information easily.
I have been reluctant to blog for a very long time. In the end I decided to create this site in order to share my thoughts and learning with the world.
